Symbolism - anthing that stands for and/or represents something else in addition to its own meaning. In literature, a symbolic object is usually repeated throughout the work to create a greater impact with the reader.
A cornucopia is a hollow horn, usually filled with an abundance of harvest "goodies." In many countries, the cornucopia is a symbol of the bounties of the Fall harvest. One can usually find it filled to overflowing with nuts, fruits, and vegetables in the Fall.
On page 148, Katniss describes the giant cornucopia that was filled with all the items a tribute would need in order to survive the Hunger Games. Later in the book, the image of the giant cornucopia is brought to our attention just before the end of the Hunger Games. By this time, the cornucopia has come to symbolize the survival of the tributes.
Recall any images or ideas that are frequently repeated throughout the novel? In your opinion, what do you think the images/ideas symbolize?
Choose two or three major characters from this novel and create a symbol to represent this character. Describe the symbol and explain why you chose the symbol for your characters.
